Overview

Best management practices for forestry protect our forest, soil, and water resources while allowing appropriate use of the resources. The following guidelines from will help to ensure that Illinois’ forested sites are not degraded, that the waters associated with these forests are of the highest quality compatible with natural processes, and that our forest resources are wisely used.

These practices were developed cooperatively by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Illinois Forestry Development Council, Southern Illinois University, and the University of Illinois.

About the Illinois Department of Natural Resources

The mission of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is to manage, conserve and protect Illinois’ natural, recreational, and cultural resources; further the public’s understanding and appreciation of those resources; and promote the education, science, and public safety of Illinois’ natural resources for present and future generations.

About the Illinois Forestry Development Council

The Illinois Forestry Development Council’s charge is to identify and evaluate the social, economic, scientific, and educational value of Illinois’s forest lands and forest products industries.
